The Records of the Centro de Estudios Puertorriqueños 1935-2003 1973-1999.

The Records of the Centro de Estudios Puertorriqueños document the founding, administration, programs and intellectual production of this pioneering and innovative research center. In addition they attest to its role within the Puerto Rican/Latino community, its influence in academic circles and its ongoing commitment to chronicling and interpreting the Puerto Rican experience. An extraordinarily rich collection, highlights of the records include materials on the origins of Centro, its alternative modes of internal governance, the numerous projects and initiatives undertaken by its research task forces and units and the multiple organizations staff helped establish and/or actively participated in. The materials in the collection span the years from 1935 to 2003 with the bulk concentrating on the years 1973-1999. They consist of correspondence, memoranda, minutes, photographs, flyers, clippings, proposals, reports, speeches, videos, slides, financial statements and artifacts. The folders are arranged alphabetically and the documents are arranged chronologically. The documents are in both Spanish and English.

Established in 1973, the founding of the Centro de Estudios Puertorriqueños (Centro) was the culmination of years of struggle on the part of Puerto Rican faculty, students and community members to carve out a space for intellectual inquiry into the Puerto Rican/Latino experience. Intended on providing support to the then fledgling Puerto Rican Studies departments within the City University of New York (CUNY), the Centro was also formed to create grassroots links between academia and the Puerto ...
